Research- Whitworth Art Gallery

I began looking for inspiration and the Whitworth Art Gallery is somewhere I always like to see whats on show as they often have many wallpaper exhibtions. Private Paradise is a collection of contemporary artists works which look to the past for inspiration and create their version of their private paradise. Thought is might be worth a visit! Below are a few images I took.

New Ideas for 3rd year!

Over the summer I have began to brain storm some ideas to make the work easier for myself in Septemeber. I began by producing mind maps around a theme of Down at the bottom of the garden, for the reasons that I have constantly kept to a floral theme through out my degree and I'd like this years work to be the best it can be and try a slightly different direction-still however keeping it for interior purposes-wallpaper/hangings etc. I began by adding words like butterflies, dragonflys, insects, flowers, caterpillas, lady birds, bees, fairys and frogs. All wonderful brightly coloured things and full of pattern and detail to draw, manipulate etc. I want to experiment with drawing techniques, print, laser cutting and continue with developing my CAD skills to produce wonderful exciting colourful surface patterns for interior purposes. I've had ideas of still producing wallpapers but also would like to work towards producing fine wallhangings/lengths again along with wall art and greeting cards and gift bags like I did previously; to demonstrate how else my surface designs can be put into practice into a commercial environment.
After beginning browsing the internet and researching the theme in more detail I relised how vast my theme was and maybe it needed narrowing down abit and focusing on one area.
Butterflys was my favourite. The colours, patterns and textues within the wings were beautiful and I could see potential and more ideas were flowing turning into many more mind maps. Next step research...
I came across many inspiring pieces and designers...

I love the texture and the intense colours mixed with abstract pattern.

This is an idea that had sprang to mind with me... 3D elements on wallpaper. I could achieve this using the laser cutter

Also the website Tactile Wonderland was of great inspiration. Images taken from the webpage below

Sucessful Exhibtion night!

The exhibtion night went really well in June, everyone had such a lovely evening, all our hard work had paid off and it was time to enjoy the night and relax and get ready to enjoy a well earned summer break!
all of my businness cards had been picked up and unfortunatly so had all my greeting card packs I had on display for sale! I think people miss read them as being free. However they must have liked them! So alls good :)
Over the summer I've had time to reflect and think about what do base my dissertation on and what will be the theme of my next project which will then be on display at my final end of year show in June 2012. Hopefully I can come up with a bigger and better exhibition display this year. Although this does seem a long while off yet...its not! When returning to uni in September the time will fly by and stress will be upon us once again to produce the best work we can to show case our talents. Thoughts on my new project theme will  soon follow...:)

Canvas Art

I've had a bit of extra time on my hands and the deadline is still a week away for final major so decided to create some wallart for the exhibition to go with my wallpapers. I've used my more abstract drawings for these and had them digitally printed onto cotton before staining them with dyes and incorporating stitch into areas for definition. All efforts and time will now go into my report and putting up the exhibition. Exciting!

Final Major Project- Exhibition june!

For this final project of the year I'm designing an autumn 11' floral wallpaper collection with a theme of 'Pansy Frills'. I've hand drawn the main elements and the backgrounds are created from textured fabrics/patterned papers scanned in then all manipulated in photoshop to create final CAD designs.
